A NEW LIFESTYLE

Coming to university introduces you to a new lifestyle that is much different than your norm. More responsibilities and tasks are placed upon yourself as decision-making skills play a large role in how successful you adapt to your new surrounding. In addition, you have more freedom now than ever before. You are no longer held down by strict rules or guidelines placed upon by your teachers or parents. You can basically do whatever you please. The main point is to look after yourself.

The academic environment in university very much contrasts that in high school. You are no longer in a small classroom where the teacher knows your name and comes after you when you are missing an assignment. The rules and guidelines in university are much stricter. This brings up the first point of the importance of time management skills. Time management has never been more important in your life. Being able to schedule your free time around your classes, prioritizing and making room for assignments, and studying for tests have never been more significant. Since all the responsibility is placed on the student to know what’s going on and when assignment are due, having a planner is an important tool to have.

Remember that you have a planner for a reason. Don’t just leave it around and not write anything in it. Take down assignment due dates and testing dates and learn to discipline yourself. Plan your day and follow them and remember to leave some time for yourself.

Other Time Management Techniques:
• Don’t leave things to the last minute
• Plan ahead and follow your plan
• Create some time for yourself
• Combine activities to make up the most out of your time
• Prioritize your activities
• Set up daily goals as well as weekly goals
